Statues that preserve the history of Kaluga
Pobedy Square and the monument of the Motherland
Pobedy Square is laid out in the form of a circle, connecting three main streets of the city: Kirov Street, Stepan Razin Street and Marshal Zhukov Street. The project was designed by two architects, P. Perminov and E. Kireev.
The pedestrian zone in the center of the roundabout is decorated with colorful flower beds and lawns; paved alleys and pathways are illuminated by cast iron streetlights. At night, the square lights up with numerous string lights and spotlights.
The centerpiece of the ensemble is the monument of a woman holding the first artificial satellite of the Earth in her left hand and a silver ribbon, symbolizing the Oka river, in her right hand. This monument was erected in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Kaluga being liberated from the Nazi occupation during the Great Patriotic War. The Sputnik satellite in her hand is a symbol of peaceful space exploration that has always been synonymous with Kaluga. It is surrounded by a beautiful fountain, which is also illuminated at night.
In front of the fountain there is another monument – an equestrian statue of Marshal Georgy Zhukov, a hero of the Great Patriotic War, who was born in Kaluga Region. This statue was a gift to the people of Kaluga from the Ministry of Defense on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. The statue is placed right behind the eternal light – another important symbol of the Victory.
