The construction of the first sound cinema in Kaluga (later named the Central Cinema) was first thought of in the late 1920s and had great ideological significance. The future cinema seemed to be a "powerful" tool of the Cultural Revolution, towering above the city.
The cinema was opened on May 1, 1935. In 1937, architect V. N. Yanushkevich reconstructed the main entrance and erected a tower at the corner of Kirov and Lenin Streets as a high point at the intersection of the main streets of the city. In 1984, another auditorium was added and the facade of the building was partially changed.
